LETTER FROM LONDON I expect, like most of
Britain and the rest of the world, you have been wondering what
happened to the Large Hadron Collider! You surely haven't
forgotten about it have you? Have you?? Well, please don't
switch me off, this is interesting stuff! Sort of science fiction!
Only this is science fact! Some time back we did write about
it a couple of times. Well, its gone beyond the construction phase
now and is about to be switched on. You may, or may not, recall that
it is all taking place in a large tunnel which is an 18 mile long
circle deep underground in Switzerland, not far from Geneva, and it also straddles the
border with France. It is said to be to physics what the Apollo
space shots were to space exploration. The idea is to send a beam of
protons around the tunnel guided by 9,300 magnets. Four giant
detectors study collisions between protons. These detectors can take
90 million measurements 600 million times a second. They have 6000
scientists working on it all from hundreds of institutions in more
than 55 nations. So you will gather that this thing is big, it is
also expensive, very expensive and it could result in the total
destruction of the earth. So some say! Some
scientists, seemingly, are worried about the
machine's apparent ability to create black holes. This would happen within
the 18 mile tunnel of the accelerator. It is said, and reported,
that several may well be created. These scientists are concerned that a
black hole would be created that would suck the entire earth into
it. I am serious, that is the concern! And these scientists,
un-named, want the experiment called off! Other scientists say
that it couldn't happen! Now that's reassuring! But how do they
know? This hasn't been done before! If it had been then we
already know the answer and so why the experiment?Well, we have
a few days before we all find out. The Large Hadron Collider, on
Wednesday, 10th September, is to be switched on and the first beam
of protons will sweep around the 18 mile long tunnel in just 90
microseconds. That, I understand, is very fast. The magazine, "New
Scientist" tells us that the Collider's greatest promise is to
improve our understanding of the universe and our place in it."
It will also, so it is said, bridge the chasm between quantum theory
and relativity. So now you know. And if you are hearing my voice at
this moment then all is well the earth didn't go down a black hole!
Not yet anyway! It is, in fact, said to be a particle that can occupy the same place in space as another boson or particle. It is named the Higgs Boson after Peter Higgs, Fellow of the Royal Society, or so it would seem, established its existence. Which existence it is hoped the Hadron Collider will confirm. Now quantum theory does hold the premise that it is possible for matter to be in two places at the same time. The Higgs boson is sometimes called the "God particle." Isn't it interesting how men and women of science are prepared to talk seriously about something they have never seen, felt or measured and firmly believe its existence, but are not prepared to believe in the creator, God. A being whose existence can be proved without any need for something as exotic as the Hadron Collider. The existence of the Higgs boson can only be shown to exist in theory as there is a missing piece of the standard model of particle physics. This model presents a theory of the basic building blocks of matter and the forces between them.
The evolutionists speak airily
of evolution doing this, or doing that as though evolution was a
person! Have you heard of the experiments conducted some years
ago with fruit flies? Fruit flies have a very short life span and
one can go through many generations in comparatively short time. It
was shown by the experiments that fruit flies after those many
generations did not change into anything else. They remained fruit
flies. In fact no evolutionist, however eminent, however skilful in
the use of television and of self-publicity can present examples of
any insect, reptile, bird, fish or mammal changing into something
else. There are no intermediate fossils to be found. If, for sake of
argument, one says evolution has stopped, then what stopped it!
If it is continuing then there should be examples of a species
changing into another species. But it makes good TV, seems to be
clever and can be a useful source of appearance fees. Then there is morality. A
sense of right and wrong. Why would man evolve morality And
what is the definition of right and wrong anyway! What do you
mean right? What do you mean wrong? By what standards are these
things assessed? By what physical reason could they have evolved.
There can be no mental or non physical reason. Why is there no court
of justice for birds? A cuckoo doesn't build a nest in which
to lay its eggs. It will use another bird's nest, throwing out any
eggs that are there and laying its own in substitute. It does this
because it is a cuckoo. It doesn't do it if it is a wren or a robin
or any other kind of bird. Birds don't mate across the species.
Sparrows don't become best friends with crows, starlings or anything
else. The same is true right across the great panorama of living
creatures. Man is the only exception.
7. Why is the United States so determined to place missile systems in Poland and the Czech Republic? It is said that this is a defensive shield against Iran! However, when you look at the map both nations are a long way North and West of Iran. There is only Belarus and the Ukraine between them and Russia. The Ukraine has already expressed its desire to become part of NATO. Who can be surprised when Russia feels threatened. Of course those missile systems are being put there with Russia in mind. Who then will be surprised when Russia and China expand their existing friendship into a full-blown alliance. An action which could cause the EU to take defensive action. A recent article in the Sunday Times had these two paragraphs. "The world is showing alarming parallels with the 1930s. Lights are turning to red as the world again approaches depression. The credit crunch and the collapse of world trade talks are making nations introverted. Meanwhile, the defeated power of the last war, Russia, is flexing its muscles and finding them in good working order. .... On Thursday Gordon Brown told his troops in Afghanistan that 'what you are doing here prevents terrorism coming to the streets of Britain.' He cannot believe this any more than do his generals. Afghanistan poses no military threat to Britain. Rather it is Britain's occupation and the response in neighbouring Pakistan that fosters anti-western militancy in the region. Like the impoverishment of Germany between the wars, the stirring of anti-western and anti-Christian sentiment in the Muslim world can only be dangerous and counter-productive. Yet we do it." Didn't we just have the Olympic Games celebrating the brotherhood of Man? 8. The recent resignation of President Musharraf of Pakistan has left a vacuum in Pakistan which is being rapidly filled by the Taliban. Latest reports tell of how the Taliban are flooding in to the nation. Once in they are going to be hard to dislodge. We surely have not forgotten that Pakistan is a nuclear power. The Sunday Times article I just quoted had a title. It was "We tilt at windmills as world war looms." When did you last see words similar to those! Probably quite recently when you read one of the Newsletters. Mankind refuses to acknowledge the true God. It consistently breaks His laws. There is only one way he is going to learn and that is to come to the point of total destruction. Mankind will then know that he faces annihilation brought about by his own actions. At that point the one he has constantly rejected, Jesus Christ, will step in. And a new world will begin to come into being. May that day please come soon. JohnJewell
